1. International Human Rights Day: 10 December
International Human Rights Day is observed on 10 December every year. On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly — then headquartered in Paris — ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
  • Of the 58 member states, 48 voted in favor of the resolution, while eight abstained and two failed to vote.
  • In 1946, the UN Economic and Social Council established a Commission on Human Rights, under which a nine-member drafting committee, led by Eleanor Roosevelt, was given the task of creating the charter on human rights.
  • The drafting committee deliberated on the content of the charter in two sessions between 1947 and 1948, finally completing it in May 1948.
2. To connect with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), an online portal “ENSURE” has been launched
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE- National Livestock Mission-EDEG developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries.
  • Under the Mission’s component called Entrepreneurship Development and Employment Generation (EDEG), subsidy payment for activities related to poultry, small ruminants, pigs etc. through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) goes directly to the beneficiary’s account.
  • In order to make it better, simpler and transparent, the NABARD has developed an online portal “ENSURE” so that the information related to beneficiary and processing of application can be made readily available.
3. PM Modi to inaugurate Partners’ Forum 2018
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will inaugurate the fourth Partners’ Forum on 12th December at New Delhi.
  • The Government of India, in association with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), is hosting a two-day international conference on 12th and 13th December 2018, bringing together about 1500 participants from across 85 countries to improve the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents.
  • This is the fourth in a series of global high-level multi-country, multi-stakeholder events aimed at sustaining global momentum for issues related to health of women, children and adolescents.
4. The Government of India and ADB sign a $31 Million Loan Agreement to develop Tourism and boost Jobs in Tamil Nadu
The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a Loan Agreement for $31 million to build-up the State Tourism Industry and boost visitor arrivals.
  • The Project will support the conservation and restoration of eight heritage monuments, one museum, three temples, and a pond. It will build various facilities at the sites, including information centers, rest centers, and toilet blocks, with facilities served by solar-powered lighting and energy efficient lighting.
  • The total cost of the Project is $44.04 million, of which the Government will provide $13.04 million. The estimated completion date is June 2020.
5. Economist Surjit Bhalla resigns from EAC-PM
Economist Surjit S Bhalla has resigned from his position as the part-time Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
  • The Council is headed by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy. Other part-time members on the Council include economists Rathin Roy, Ashima Goyal and former bureaucrat Ratan Watal.
  • PMEAC is a non-constitutional and non-statutory, non-permanent and independent body, constituted with the prime and sole aim to analyse all critical issues, economic or otherwise, referred to it by the prime minister and advising him thereon.
  • It is mandate to give advice to prime minister on economic matters such as inflation, GDP changes, export-import changes, creating supporting environment for increased trade and commerce.
6. Home Ministry launchesTwitter account to spread awareness about cybercrimes
With an objective of spreading awareness about cybercrimes and precautions to be taken, the Ministry of Home Affairs has launched @CyberDost. The Twitter handles - @CyberDost - is aimed at enhancing people's basic knowledge about cybercrimes and precautions to be taken for prevention.
  • The Twitter handle is educating people about various channels through which complaints about cybercrimes can be filed and makes people aware of their duties regarding misuse of cyber space by some people in the country.
  • The handle is also to mitigate possibilities of disruption in normal business activities or losses due to cybercrimes.
7. Former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das appointed new RBI Governor
A day after Urjit Patel resigned from his post as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India with immediate effect citing personal reasons, Former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the new Governor of the apex bank.
  • Mr. Das will have a tenure of three years. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his name. Mr Das is currently the Member of the Finance Commission.
  • Das, a 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, retired as Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017. After his retirement, he was named India’s G-20 sherpa and also appointed as a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
8. Mary Kom honoured with Meethoileima title
Manipur government honored MC Mary Kom by conferring ‘Meethoileima’ (Outstanding Queen) title at a felicitation function held in Imphal’s Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
  • The state government conferred the title ‘Meethoileima’ in recognition of her unprecedented feat of winning the sixth gold medal in the recently concluded World Boxing Championship and her illustrious career in the field.
  • State chief minister N Biren Singh also handed a cheque of Rs 10, 00,000 to Mary Kom.
  • The chief minister also named a road in Imphal as ‘MC Mary Kom Road.’
  • MC Mary Kom is the first woman boxer to win the World Boxing Champion title six times.
